Obituary

Philip B. Robinson passed away from congestive heart failure on Friday, October 25, 2013 while at home with family present. He was 89 years old.

Phil was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 27, 1924. He was the fourth of five children born to his parents, Everett Lincoln and Lula Mae Robinson. Phil remained in Missouri until he joined the United States Navy in 1943 at age 19. He served until 1946, receiving an honorable discharge following surgery for appendicitis. Upon discharge, Phil enrolled in college before embarking on his lifelong career with insurance. In 1952, Phil became a licensed insurance agent and broker, and started the Philip B. Robinson Insurance Agency. At age 31, he met the love his life, Wanda, who was working as a secretary for Travelers Insurance in Los Angeles. She caught his eye in a big way, so Phil made his "ultimate sales pitch" and they sealed the deal one year later, marrying December 8, 1956 at The Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. Phil and Wanda's early years as a married couple began in Whittier, California. There they had two children, Brian and Lori. In 1965, they moved to Newport Beach, so Phil relocated his agency to Newport as well. There they lived for 13 years, before moving to Laguna Beach where they remained for over 30 years. Their life was filled with love and good times. They had many friends and kept active throughout the years, with many of their activities surrounding Phil's involvement with Kiwanis.

Phil was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason as well as a Kiwanian, but it was Kiwanis where he really found his calling. Phil had embarked on his "second career" in 1952 when he joined the Kiwanis Club of Cypress. An active Kiwanian, Phil held numerous leadership positions over the years, most notably Governor of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International in 1972-1973. Phil joined the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club in 1974, and continued his many years of service with them. Phil and Wanda attended countless events and conventions over the years. They were truly part of the Kiwanis family and developed many great friendships along the Kiwanis "trail".

Some of Phil and Wanda's happiest times were also spent at their second home in Palm Desert, which they owned for over 30 years. On December 8, 2013, Phil and Wanda would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. During the past eight years as Phil's health declined, he was happy to spend his time with Wanda, Brian and Lori, and his five beloved grandchildren; Amanda, Reid, Madeline, Connor and Alexandra. He also enjoyed his days with Rey, his faithful caregiver and friend. A day did not go by without Phil expressing his love for his family. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, and felt he was "married to the most wonderful person in the world, his Wanda".

Phil was a true salesman and a "people's person". Whether through insurance or Kiwanis, Phil enjoyed meeting people, selling insurance, and remaining philanthropically active. He believed his success was not measured by the policies he sold, but by the people he met and the friendships he made along the way. Phil retired in 2006, but was proud that his agency continues today, 61 years later, under the leadership of his son, Brian. He also continued to remain as an active member of Kiwanis until shortly before his passing. Phil will forever be remembered as a wonderful person, husband, father, grandfather, family member, friend, salesman, Kiwanian, and a great inspiration to many who admired him.
