Obituary

Philomena Miceli, 99, passed away February 10, 2016, at her home in Laguna Woods, California.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 24252 El Toro Road, Laguna Woods, California, on Saturday, February 20, 2016, 9 a.m., followed by burial/interment at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, 7845 E. Santiago Canyon Road, Orange, California.

Philomena (nickname Numan) was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Enrico and Virginia Cuzzi on September 8, 1916. She is survived by her daughter Janet Miceli; sister Josephine Telesco; grandchildren James Martin, Gianna and Marissa Gruenwald; and great-grandchildren Vance Harrell-Winter and Luke Pranata. She is predeceased by her husband Anthony; daughter Rosemary Martin; sister Albina Dunn; and brothers Phillip, Anthony, Alfred and Dominic Cuzzi.

Philomena graduated Central High School where she became proficient in Gregg shorthand. Some of the jobs she held were bookkeeper, legal secretary, bank proof operator, and postal employee. She also was an ambitious do-it-yourselfer and had avocations such as making wedding gowns, tailoring, reupholstering furniture, tiling floors, and preparing income tax returns for family members. Most importantly, she baked delicious cakes, pies, cookies and made homemade ravioli (100 at a time) for family gatherings, followed by roasted chickens and vegetables. Her favorite words were, "It's time to eat."

She was kind, loving, generous, selfless and extremely dedicated to her family. Appropriately named "Philomena," lover of strength, she was the family rock. After she retired from the post office, she took care of her mother and aunt until they passed away. In 1976 she convinced her husband and Rosemary and family to move to California so that she could have her daughters together and baby sit her grandchildren. She has lived in California ever since then but kept in contact with all of her New Jersey family members. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about a year ago.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Association at ALZ.org or mailed to Alzheimer's Association, National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., FL. 17, Chicago, Illinois, 60601.
