It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Richard Eldon Beverly's passing.Dick, as his friends called him, ended his journey on Sunday September 27, 2020.He passed peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Jeannette, at his side. They were watching a Ram's football game at the time. He loved the Ram's (and 49ers) and was very happy the season had finally started up again. He lived his 88 years to the fullest and was strong in mind, body and spirit to the end.
Richard was born in Sabina Ohio on January 5, 1932.He was 3rd son to proud parents, Harry and Edith, and brother to seven brothers and sisters:Helen, Heber, Chester, Randal, Shirley, Patty and Karen. All grew up together as a close family in a little farmhouse in Sabina, Ohio.
Richard stepped out to make a name for himself at age 18 by leaving Ohio to join the US Air Force as an airplane mechanic. His potential and aptitude were soon recognized, and the Air Force quickly promoted him and trained him to be a pilot. At March Air Force Base, Riverside CA, Dick went to an officer's dance and met Jeannette Slattery, a Riverside native. They fell in love and married in Arlington, CA on August 12th, 1956.
Once his service to our country was complete, Jeannette and Richard returned to Ohio where Richard attend Ohio State University. During this 5-year period, Richard graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering (1962), and they started their family with Lisa on September 12, 1958.Then Richard and Jeannette had a decision to make, although they would greatly miss the comforts of a home cooked meal by mom and his sisters to help in raising toddler, Lisa, with a job offer in Southern California and another Ohio winter just a couple months away they packed up— themselves, all their belonging, 1 child, 1 child "in the oven", 2 sisters (Patty and Karen) — into their tiny Chevrolet Corvair and headed back to California.
Soon Richard obtained a master's degree in aerospace engineering from USC, began his career, bought a house, and added two more children to the family, David (December 13, 1962) and Sharon (July 7, 1965). Richard embraced every aspect of his roles as husband, father, and contributor to the industry he loved and was proud to support, especially in the nascent days of space technology and exploration.Richard's aerospace career spanned 30 years. He retired in 1992.For the next 28 years he was free to travel, golf, remodel homes, garden, entertain, and explore many other interests.
Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeannette, his 3 children and their spouses — Lisa and Phil Bailey, David and Ann Beverly, Sharon and Brian McNeil — and his 4 grandchildren — Lauren Beverly (30), Parker Beverly (26), Blake McNeil (21) and Brooke McNeil (18).
During Covid-19, Richard embraced Zoom and loved how it connected our family. In the same spirit, we are planning to embrace Zoom to bring all his family and friends together again. Richard loved telling stories about his exploits as a young man, his family, and his travels with Jeannette. We look forward to sharing some of them with everyone during this Zoom memorial celebration. This tribute will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020, starting at 11:30 AM PDT. Details below.
Richard's final resting spot will be Miramar National Cemetery located in San Diego California.
With respect to kind offerings of support, our family welcomes donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers or gifts. Thank you.
