Obituary

Richard Bertram Engler, born April 2, 1931, in New York City, passed peacefully, of respiratory failure, at the age of 86, on September 9, 2017, in Laguna Woods, near his beloved wife of 17 years Marilyn June O'Meara, now Marilyn Quist Engler.

Born to Louis Engler and Sadie Gold both of New York City, Richard had two siblings (passed) - Claire Sudler and Allen Engler ; with another sister, Marjorie, now living in Santa Monica, with whom he was very close; They often discussed the ruminations of having lived many years on both coasts;and the pros and cons of both worlds over a century of change. He would never let the sun set on a quarrel after these robust discussions.

Richard came to California in the 1980's after having completed his B. A, in business at Syracuse University in tandem with a military stint with the U. S, Army , where he served bravely, and was honorably discharged. After which, Richard embraced a successful career as a licensed real estate agent during which he met his wife, the love of his life, Marilyn Quist, where the couple set up an extended family home in Laguna Woods California.

Once settled in California, Richard became a very loyalfather figure to Marilyn's children and grandchildren starting with Julie and her daughter, Christa, with her husband Adam Burrows and theirthree children, Noah, Hannah and Gavin, followed by Christine Sweeney who with husband Chris have two children Laurinda and Cara, and finally Marilyn's son Richard and his wife Maura, with their two children Reid and Kendall.

Of great influence to Richard was his East Coast extended family, beginning with his nephew Peter Sudler and his wife Eileen .The Sudler's have three children.Elizabeth and her husband , Jonathon Sobel, have three children, Benjamin, Samuel and Brooklyn.Their son Brian and his wife Christina, have a son Kellan.Another son Daniel, along with Brian, served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A niece of Richard's,Jane Sudler Black with her two children, Emily and Aaron, also survive him.Richard's aforementioned sister, Marjorie Simon, has a daughter, Darrah, who has a son, Matthew.

Rich, as we called him, used his finicky, quirky personality, to engage all of us in his fanatic knowledge of all current events, his extensive knowledge of college sports, the history of the Middle East, all things New York Giants and Mets and the great divide between Christianity and Hebrew religions as they apply to our modern cultures.

Rich golfed regularly when he could, challenged his wife, Marilyn, at ping pong where she always won; loved to argue over current events and ultimately taught us all to engage in a spirit of learning that embraces a culture of peaceful debate and a solid handshake at the end of the day.

Richard, playfully, acknowledged his lifetime preference for his mom's cooking, which caused his step daughter, Julie, much anxiety in trying to satisfy his very specific eating habits as she catered to his later life needs.

Richard loved his L. A. Times every day;his sporadic impulse buying habits at the grocery store, and his jaunty baseball caps, his afternoon's at McDonald's with his wife Marilyn, massive bowls of ice cream, in depth political discourse and simply imitating Bugs Bunny with a funny cartoon like laugh – his sign that he loved you.
