Obituary

Richard Hubert Moreno, born June 15th, 1933 in Los Angeles, CA, went to be with our Lord Sunday, March 19th, 2017 in Mission Viejo. Born to Salvador and Virginia Moreno, Richard had one sister, Delores (passed). In 1945 the Morenos bought a house in West LA next to the home of Leo and Mary Virginia Schmitt and their two daughters, Mary Claire and Gretchen.

Richard graduated Washington High School in the summer of 1951 and in January 1953 entered the United States Marine Corps, 1st Marine Division. He attained the rank of sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Expert Rifleman Badge.

Richard returned home from Korea in January 1956 and five months later married Gretchen, the girl next door. Stephen was born a year later, followed by Laurie in 1959, and Susan in 1960. That same year the family moved from Los Angeles to Whittier. Richard worked as a truck driver for Challenge Dairy, delivering milk and dairy products to retail stores throughout the Los Angeles area.

In 1969 the family moved to La Palma where the children all finished high school by 1978, and shortly thereafter were married and out of the house. In 1985 Richard and Gretchen moved to Laguna Woods to live with Gretchen's father, Leo. After retiring from Challenge, Richard became a motor patrolman for Laguna Woods security which he did enthusiastically for the next twenty years.

Throughout his life Richard enjoyed skin diving, golf, movies, oil painting, playing cards, and participating in sports and games with his wife, children, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. At the end of 1992, his father-in-law Leo unexpectedly passed away. Just two months later Richard lost the love of his life, Gretchen. He was now alone in his home but not lonely. When a person gives love he receives it back in kind. Richard had always been a loving person, surrounded by friends and family who loved him dearly. He was the dad every kid dreams of having, the uncle who made you feel special, the friend you cherish for life. In his presence life was a fun adventure and you knew that you were an important part of his journey. Richard was surrounded by his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, the multitudinous Scherf family, and scores of friends for the rest of his life. He was a good man, a proud Marine, and a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

Richard is survived by his three children and their spouses, Steve & Kathy, Laurie & Michael, Susan & Nelson; six grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew, Courtney, Jaclyn & Jonathan, Kristin & Kyle, Thomas, Adam; and his six great-grandchildren, Carter, Luke, Gunnar, Savannah, Charlotte, and Jack. He is greatly missed by all.
