On December 23, 2019, Richard Thacher, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 86.
Richard was born May 30, 1933 in Beverly MA (in his great-uncle's home), the fourth child of Howland and Sara (Guerney) Thacher. He moved numerous times in his childhood. Beverly, Milton, and Middleton MA were particularly important communities in his development. Richard served in the Air Force (35th Fighter – Interceptor Wing ) during the Korean War and was based in Japan. As Richard often said, "he was one of four boys his pappy brought West in '55' – along with most of the rest of the family he moved to sunny Southern California in 1955, after leaving the Air Force, and never looked back. Richard married Valerie Anne Colclough on March 11, 1972 and lovingly raised two children, Jennifer and Steven. He worked for a number of years at the engineering firm Ralph M Parsons (later Allied Signal, Procon, and Haliburton) as a project manager. After near death and long-term hospitalization from a burst appendix, Richard began a second career in real estate, working with his wife Valerie to build, manage, and invest in rental properties.
Richard was a devoted family man with an incredible work ethic. In the company of his wife and children, he put many, many miles on his motorhome (RmWVue) as he explored the US. He really only stopped working in the last few years, as Alzheimer's prevented him from continuing the vigorous hands-on-management of his rental properties that he loved. Richard was known among friends and family for his love of singing and continued the Thacher passion for ice cream.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Jim, Ed, Edna, and John. He is survived by his wife Valerie, his children from a former marriage, Susan and David, his children from his second marriage, Jennifer and Steven, grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 29th at McCormick and Sons Mortuary in Laguna Hills at 3:00 pm.
