Obituary

We are celebrating the joyous life of Sally Marguerite Raccioppo (Recupio) McCall born October 17, 1932 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Amelia Mary Trepiccione (Trepicone) and Anthony (Antonio) Raccioppo (Recupio). Sally's father moved from Naples, Italy when he was about three-years-old. Anthony met and married Amelia when she was 15-years-old. They gave birth to Sally when Amelia was 16-years-old. Sally's sister Maryanne was born five years later. They settled in New Castle, PA where Anthony was a successful electrical contractor & engineer and Amelia a homemaker.

Sally attended Rose Elementary School in New Castle & St. Vitus Catholic Church where she was baptized. When her father's business became increasingly successful, Anthony moved the family to Los Angeles, California when Sally was starting the 7th grade. They built a custom home for the family in Ladera Heights on Chariton Avenue in Los Angeles. Grades were extremely important to Sally's father. She became determined to have only the best grades awarded and knew at a young age that she wanted to become a nurse.

Sally was determined to be a successful person by making a difference in the world when it came to working as a Registered Nurse. Her achievement was completed when she graduated from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Los Angeles in 1953. This degree brought her a new found independence; she was the first female to go to college in her family and this made her parents very proud. After becoming a nurse she was introduced to Verlin "Mac" McCall by his brother Dr. Bill McCall as he worked with her at a Los Angeles hospital. Sally and Mac were instantly crazy about each other.

When Mac got transferred up to Santa Barbara while working for Squibb Pharmaceuticals, he knew that he couldn't live without her. Shortly after, Sally and Mac eloped to Tijuana, Mexico. Sally became increasingly concerned that their Tijuana marriage certificate was not valid. Mac realized that they had to marry in the United States so they were married in Las Vegas (Clark County), Nevada in 1955. When Mac converted to Catholicism, he felt that in order to truly sanctify their marriage with God that they should marry a third time in the Catholic Church. They were married by Monsignor McCarthy at St. John Fisher Church. They were married three times in three different cities and in two different countries. Sally and Mac were married for 33 years and had five children. Sally had to give-up nursing, but she ran the household like a hospital wing while living in Palos Verdes, CA then to Winnipeg, Canada, next to San Jose, CA and then later to Lake Forest, CA. She enjoyed family gatherings with her sister's family, including her nieces and nephews, weekends at Uncle Bill's with the kids swimming and playing. She had a close bond with her eldest niece Candy. She even agreed to join the family on a few camping trips, and escorting her teenage kids on many ski trips while Mac traveled.

Sally's intelligence, strength, ambition, courage, conviction, and empowerment of people have been passed down throughout the generations. When Mac died in 1988 it took her by storm; she never remarried as her love for Mac was too strong.

Sally went peacefully in her bed on September 24, 2014 within the loving embrace of her daughter Kathleen (Kitty) in Irvine, CA. Her husband, Verlin "Mac" Ralph McCall, precedes her in death. She is survived by Son Timothy McCall, wife Deborah McCall, and children William Hess and Crystal McCall; Son Patrick McCall, Wife Leigh Erin Connealy, and children Brittany McCall, Brooke Moran, Breanne McCall, Beth McCall, Robert Slingsby, Grant Connealy, and Alannah Connealy; Son Kelly McCall, wife Maryam Lotfizadeh-McCall, and children Lauren Feldbruegge and Chadd McCall; Daughter Kathleen McCall-Smith, husband David Smith, and children Alison Clanton and Jordan Smith; Son James McCall and wife Lynette McCall. Sally will be missed by five wonderful children, thirteen perfect grandchildren, and five precious great grandchildren.

The memorial will be held at Ascension Cemetery at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
