IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sukhdev Singh
Dail
November 23, 1941 – August 7, 2023
Sukhdev Singh Daïl, devoted husband, loving father, chiropractor and artist, passed away peacefully, with his grandchildren, Mali and Siraj, holding his hands, ten months after losing his wife of 48 years, Marija Miletić Daïl.
A man of endless creativity, his journey began in a small village in Rehana, India. An inveterate globetrotter, his curiosity and creative drive drew him to leave his position as an art teacher (achieved at only 18 years of age!), in order to dangerously traverse the Middle East in a (junky) car so he could study art at the Royal College in Brussels, Belgium. After becoming fluent in French, he flew across to Toronto, Canada and learned how to animate. In 1968, he was invited by Hanna-Barbera Studios to come to Hollywood and work on "Scooby Doo."
However, animation was only a seasonal job and it was difficult to earn a living wage. A hard worker, he had multiple side jobs. After a few years juggling work, he decided to go back to school and become a chiropractor, thereby finally fulfilling his father's dream of continuing the family legacy of medicine.
Incredibly health conscious, he kept himself fit playing tennis. He loved competing at a near-professional level and attending matches at Indian Wells and even Wimbledon. Travel was another great joy, taking him across continents. In the fall, he would relax in Croatia before continuing on to Punjab, helping his family maintain their centuries-long legacy, celebrating it via his artwork.
Taking early retirement from his chiropractic practice, he was able to return to his first passion, art. He left many creative works for art lovers to enjoy all over, having exhibitions of his paintings and sculptures in LA and Carmel. He was proudest of his contribution to the last community where he lived, the sculpture "Seabreeze" located on the southern end of the main beach in Laguna.
Blessed with a large, blended family, Sukhdev is survived by his son, Mavi, his daughters, Mirna (Brad) and Vera (Dave), as well as his grandchildren: David, Christopher, Brina, Dawson, Adric, Cailin, Siraj and Mali. Also grieving his loss are his siblings, Jagmohan, Rita and Bindu and their children. Many cousins and other family members were loved by this proud patriarch. Everyone who met him felt enriched after leaving his company. Sadly, now he has left us, but we are all the richer for the years that he was with us.
