Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of Swapan "Bulbul" Gangopadhyay, who left us on December 29, 2024 at 8:00PM PST in Newport, CA. Swapan lived a rich and full life, sharing his kindness and wisdom with those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born on April 8, 1950, in Salkia, West Bengal, India, Swapan graduated with a Masters Degree in Statistics from ISI, Kolkata. Working with computers and information technology decades before most knew what they were, Swapan had a long illustrious career beginning as a fresh graduate at Phillips in 1970 until his death while still employed at IBM.

Swapan was predeceased by his father, Amarendra Nath Gangopadhyay, his mother, Anima Gangopadhyay, his brother, Subhash Gangopadhyay, and his sister-in-law, Shefali Gangopadhyay.

Swapan is survived and fondly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Manisha Gangopadhyay. Swapan married Manisha, his soulmate, in 1981, and together they made Kolkata, then Mumbai, and finally Irvine, CA their home.

Swapan's memory will continue to live on through his brother-in-law, Sumit Chatterji (Surasree Chatterji); his sister-in-laws, Madhusri Roy (Dr. Kirity Roy), and Luna Banerjee (Sandipan Banerjee); his aunt, Purnima Chatterjee, and his dear cousins. His memory is also cherished by his many colleagues and friends that he made along the way and stayed in touch with up until his death

While Swapan and Manisha did not have children of their own, their nieces and nephews loved him like a father and he treated them like his own. He will be dearly missed by Tapur Chatterjee (Nikhil Nichani), Tupur Chatterjee (Sonu Shewakramani), Kingkini Roy, Tanaya Lahiri (Ramjit Lahiri), Neil Chatterjee and Reena Biswas (Arnab Biswas). Through them, Swapan enjoyed being a loving granduncle to Niaa, Hridhaan, Vihaan, Nevaan, Yaara, and Aarik, who will always remember him fondly.

Swapan had deep faith in God and was a devotee of Lord Shiva, Ma Kali, and Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. He often spent his evenings in the last few years listening to Manisha read aloud about the life of Sri Ramakrishna. Swapan enjoyed listening to music, from mainstream and Bollywood hits to old Bengali and devotional songs. His favorite times were spent being with his family, and traveling the world to see new places. His commitment to his family and his faith shone through every aspect of his life.

Swapan's legacy is one of a life dedicated to his duty, his wife, and his family. He lives on in the hearts of the many who knew and loved him.
