Obituary

Theresa "Sally" Ellen Hughes was born July 15, 1935 in Sheffield, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of 8 children to Agnes and Alfred Hughes. Sally's father operated Hughes Band Saw Service, which served the many sawmills in the Williamsport area. The building is still in use by her nephews, Tim and Brian Hughes, who run a family business out of it.

Sally attended South Williamsport High School where she earned straight A's in her classes. She was a cheerleader and participated in student council, theater and choir. Sally used to talk about life in Williamsport. One story she told was how when hunting season opened, she would see proud hunters driving down the main street with a deer strapped to the hood of their cars.

After high school graduation she went to the College of Mt. Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she earned a degree in Chemistry.  This led her to become a lab technician at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

As a single career lady during the late 50's, she shared a large home in Eden Park with 8 other working women who arranged to have the house cleaned and dinners prepared for them during the work week. She met some life-long friends: Marcie, Connie, Lois, and Tina to name a few. She and her friends would often take the train from Cincinnati to New York City and see as many Broadway shows as they could in a weekends' time.  Sally took several trips with her friend, Lois, including one to Europe covering 6 countries and 21 cities over the course of 45 days.  They first crossed the Atlantic via the newly constructed Italian ship, the SS Leonardo da Vinci. In Europe they toured and traveled by train, bus and plane making sure to see the popular sights. This was quite an endeavor for two young women at that time.

Through a "blind date" in 1962 she met Manuel Masangkay in Cincinnati who was doing his medical internship. They were soon married on May 6th,1963.  Shortly after, they moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in order for Manuel to renew his visa for reentry to the United States. Their first two children, Moira and Ben, were born in Canada. In 1965 they moved back to Ohio, this time to Xenia where Manuel worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Their third child, Roger, was born in 1965 and Tricia followed in 1967. In 1968 they purchased their first home in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Manuel transferred to the VA Hospital in Cincinnati while Sally followed the children to school to assist in the Art Department and children's classrooms. Sally created the "Lend a Picture" program at her children's elementary school making it possible for the students to check out and take home a framed print of a classic painting for a week at a time.  Each piece had an informational page on the back and was transported to and from school in a specially sewn (by Sally) carrying case.  The goal was to foster the interest of art in school age children.

The family moved to Los Alamitos, California in 1975, after Manuel passed his California State Medical Boards and became a partner at Kaiser Permanente.  Quite happy to be in the So Cal climate, they settled in Huntington Beach and lived there until 1988 as their children finished school. For a while Sally worked part time as a Chemistry Lab Instructor at Golden West College.  She enjoyed the challenge of getting back to chemistry and loved working with the young adults.

Throughout her life Sally stayed in contact with her family and friends through letters; letters which became a treasure to those who received them for they were full of interesting news, wit and all done in beautiful easy-to-read penmanship. Sally also wrote of her travels and some short stories. She had a way with words both written and spoken.

By 1988 both Sally and Manuel were ready for a change and moved to Palm Desert, California to enjoy retired life.  During the next 25 years there were several trips,  both abroad and throughout the US as well many visits with the grandchildren.

Manuel passed away on January 11, 2012 in Palm Desert.  The children and grandchildren urged Sally to move back to Orange County where she could see them and the grandchildren regularly. She did so and got to attend all the family gatherings, the grandkids sporting events, and graduations.

For the rest of her life, Sally was a fixture at family gatherings and weekend outings. She was always ready for anything and a joy to all she came in contact with. A grand nephew that was pre-teen at the time said "She's the nicest adult I've ever met."  It was often remarked by others that she had a great sense of humor, beautiful smile and a wonderful laugh.

Sally passed away on December 22, 2023 in Mission Viejo, California at the age of 88. She is survived by her 4 children, Moira (Mark) Howmann, Ben (Tracy) Masangkay, Roger Masangkay, and Tricia (Dan) Thompson.  She was a proud grandmother to 8 grandchildren: Anders, Allison, Michael, Toni Lee, Ben, Olivia, Nolan and Julia.  There are now 7 great-grandchildren, Henley, Dylan, Page, Sage, Nash, Reggie and Charlie.  Sally was dear to all and will be missed.
