IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Stephen
Haas
August 1, 1939 – August 1, 2025
Thomas Stephen Haas, known affectionately to friends and family as Tom, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at his home in Lake Forest, California—on his 86th birthday. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Charles J. and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Kent) Haas in 1939, Tom's life was marked by devotion to his family, his faith, and his community.
Tom was a loving husband to Linda Marie Haas, and together they shared a rich and joyful family life. He is survived by his children Kristen (Haas) Alvis, Stephen Haas, Gretchen (Haas) Kuzas, Michael Haas, Thomas Haas, Erika Haas, and Matthew Haas, along with Linda's daughters Regina Peterson, Laurie Gillespie, and Cynthia Swanson—each of whom he welcomed warmly into his heart. His bond with Cynthia was especially deep, and she was like a daughter to him. Tom's legacy lives on in his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and pride.
A proud graduate of Holy Rosary Parish School and Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Tom continued his academic journey at Carnegie Mellon University. Later in life, he pursued his passion for theology, earning a Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Professionally, Tom contributed his talents to Tektronix and GE Calma, where he made meaningful impacts until his retirement. In his later years, he found renewed purpose as the RCIA Director at Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church, guiding others on their spiritual journeys with compassion and wisdom.
Tom was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. When he could no longer read, he listened to audiobooks with equal enthusiasm. He loved to travel and had ventured all over the world, collecting stories and friendships wherever he went. He was a proud member of the local RV group known as the "Runaways," where his warm personality and storytelling earned him many friends.
Known for his gift of gab, Tom made connections easily and deeply. He had a knack for making others feel seen and heard. His community involvement included serving as both a past president of the local Jaycees chapter in Plum Borough and later as a State Officer, reflecting his leadership and dedication to civic life. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and a devoted volunteer with the Cursillo prison ministry.
Tom's life was one of faith, love, and thoughtful service. Those who knew him would describe him as loving, faith-filled, and intellectually curious. His warm presence and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who were lucky enough to know him.
He is predeceased by his siblings, the late Bette Marie Haas, Charles R. Haas, and Mary Katherine (Haas) McKenna.
Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be celebrated Friday, September 5th, 2025 at 10am in his home church of Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church, 21682 Lake Forest Dr., Lake Forest, CA 92630. Burial will be private in Ascension Cemetery.
Thomas Stephen Haas's life was a journey of love, learning, and unwavering faith. As we say farewell to a man of such remarkable character, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the world. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love of the Lord he so fervently served.
