Tim Pieter Hendrik Vorenkamp did not know the meaning of the word half empty. He faced the world straight ahead, full force forward, sunglasses on and capable only of seeing a glass that was half full – even if that meant just a few drops on the bottom. Forward. Positive. Kind. Brave. Tim always had a smile, a quip that would put you at ease – he could walk into a room full of strangers and make them friends. He found the good, focused on it and stayed positive with an intensity and bravery rarely seen. He was consistent. He would not be held down. He believed self-doubt was a thief. And he believed in others, his family, and God.
Born on March 27, 1997 in Caen, France our much loved Tim was taken from us far too soon on January 10th, 2016 at the age of 18 in Laguna Beach California. Tim will be remembered and cherished by all, most especially his surviving parents Petra and Pieter and his beloved younger brother Patrick.
Tim was a freshman at Berkeley with a focus on joining the Haas School of Business. Tim was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. While in the final stages of battling cancer, Tim founded the Live For Others Foundation, in an effort to find a cure for Synovial Cell Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that was to take his life but he hoped he could help stop in the future. He fought with gallantry and bravery, beating all the odds since his diagnosis in September of 2010.
There were two forces in Tim's life even greater than cancer – volleyball and the ocean. Sometimes after he had been throwing up from chemo for hours and his hair was falling out he would walk out of the room and say to his Mom, come on, time for volleyball practice. Just one month ago, with oxygen needed at night, you could not stop him from walking down the street and surfing for a couple of ours. There was not much that could stop Tim, and we believe in our hearts that he is continuing his journey.
Per Tim's wish, his ashes will be left at Oak Street Beach, Laguna Beach during a paddle-out the day following the service to celebrate Tim's life.
You are invited to the celebration of Tim on January 15, 2016. For further information please see below.
