Tomiko Erb, beloved wife of Glenn Allen Erb, passed away on August 11, 2016, in Irvine, California, at the age of 87. She is survived by her two children, JoAnn Graves of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Gerald Erb of Indianapolis, Indiana, her grandchildren, Erika Graves and Ian Graves of Los Angeles, and her siblings Kazuo Goto and Hideo Goto of Tokyo, Japan.
Tomiko was born in Ibaraki, Japan, the second youngest of seven children born to Saburo and Michi Goto. She was the only daughter to attend university, where she received her associate's degree, and she later worked as an accountant. She spent much of her free time helping her sister Fusako and Fusako's husband Glenn raise their children, JoAnn and Gerry, in Tokyo. When Fusako died in 1976, Tomiko became Glenn's companion and wife. After Glenn retired from the Civil Service in 1979, he and Tomiko moved to Irvine to settle in the beautiful Turtle Rock community. Tomiko enthusiastically adapted to American life, attending English classes at local community colleges as well as working at several part-time jobs. She was proud when she became an American citizen.
One of Tomiko's favorite pastimes was travelling with Glenn to visit major national parks and see family members across the United States. Tomiko and Glenn were avid skiers despite picking up the sport later in life, and they visited Big Bear and Lake Tahoe often with their daughter JoAnn and grandchildren Erika and Ian. At home, Glenn and Tomiko loved working side by side in their garden tending roses and planting tomatoes. Tomiko took great joy in cooking traditional Japanese dishes and sewing teddy bears for those she loved. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter.
Private services will be held on the schooner, the Curlew, at Dana Point Harbor on October 2nd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
