Obituary

Ursula Obermeit (born Bröckermann) passed away on August 25, 2023 following a lengthy struggle with dementia. She was 96 years old.

Ursula was born on March 3, 1927 in Wuppertal, Germany, the youngest of four children of Johann August Friedrich and Elsa Bröckerman (born Mittelmann). As a young child during World War II, her home in Wuppertal was destroyed by bombs and her family fled to Austria before returning home at the end of the war.

She married Hans Obermeit on April, 28,1953 in Wuppertal, Germany. After Hans' sister encouraged them to immigrate to the United States, they followed suit and immigrated to the U.S. arriving at Staten Island, New York via the Ryndam (Holland America) Ocean Liner. They lived briefly in New York before following Hans' sister, once more, to California.

Settling in Laguna Beach and later in Santa Ana, Ursula managed an apartment building for several years before working at Bank of America. She moved on as an accountant for Coast Community College District in Costa Mesa for over 20 years before joining Hans in retirement in 1985. After retiring, Ursula and Hans moved to Casta Del Sol retirement community in Mission Viejo.

Ursula and Hans enjoyed, swimming, walking and hiking, especially on return trips to the Alps in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They enjoyed cruising to locations around the world and especially loved New Zealand with its fjords. After Hans passed in 1995, Ursula cruised to Alaska with her grandson, Brandon, which brought her great joy.

Ursula and Hans had a special love for the desert and traveled at least one weekend every month with their travel trailer to Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Desert Hot Springs, and many other locations in California. Trips to the desert always included a Saturday lunch in Palm Springs, where Mom shopped for the latest swimsuit styles!

Ursula is survived and missed by her daughter, Heidi Worcester, and her only grandchild, Brandon Cholodenko. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Obermeit, her sisters Ilsa Rabenschlag and Ruth vom Lehn, and her brother Friedrich Bröckermann.
