IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Viola Ruth
Johnson
October 1, 1922 – September 17, 2025
Viola Ruth Johnson was born October 1, 1922, in Long Beach, California and went home to be with the Lord peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday evening, September 17, 2025, in her Laguna Woods home. Viola was fondly known as "Vi" by her beloved husband Art, and the rest of her family. She was born to Raymond and Ruth Soule and had a great relationship with them, as well as with her two sisters, Arline and Mary Lou.
Vi is survived by her two sons, Stephen Lee Johnson and Michael Ray Johnson, plus many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vi Johnson was known by her devotion to live out her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
She spent many years serving faithfully in the ministry of caring for babies in the church nurseries. Vi loved studying God's Word in Sunday School, women's studies, and adult home groups. She helped in Vacation Bible School, went on youth mission trips, attended couple's retreats, sang in choir, and served as a deaconess. In the role of a deaconess, she visited "the elderly" into her 99th year of life.
There is much more that could be written about her living out her faith. Two young men who went on to get seminary degrees and become pastors, give credit to surviving their academic years resulting in Masters and Doctoral degrees to her faithfully typing out all their papers – including their dissertations.
Her personal ministry was practiced by her gift of hospitality. Countless people found a church family, especially at Grace Hills Church, because she invited them into her home for a home cooked meal. Vi delighted to invite new people or those who had not been fully befriended by others, to become one of her friends. This reminds us of what Jesus said to His disciples, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34,35
Vi Johnson was appreciated and known for many things – she was a great cook, producing amazing meals at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Whether it was her egg casseroles and morning pastries, delightful sandwich creations, or Thanksgiving banquets, they were praised by all.
A self-described perfectionist, her home was always in perfect order and could pass the white-glove test.
As far as her interests and hobbies, she loved traveling with her husband, Art. They had the privilege of seeing much of the United States, Europe, and the Holy Land, as well as the Biblical sites in Turkey. The Bible came alive as they saw where the true events in Scripture actually happened. They also so enjoyed traveling various places in their camper and being out in God's creation.
In addition to everything that has already been written, Vi was very accomplished in school. She was editor of the school's newspaper and a straight A student, even skipping a year in school. She was a superb violinist, and a self-taught pianist. Interesting enough, she even loved music theory and had almost perfect pitch.
Vi Johnson leaves a legacy of being devoted to her family and an extremely loyal, loving friend. She is known by her quick wit, crazy sense of humor, spiritual example, love of games, and generous spirit. She is missed but will always be cherished.
Services will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025, 11:00 am at Grace Hills Church at 2425 Moulton Parkway, Laguna Woods, CA, 92637. A lunch reception will follow the service. A private burial ceremony for the family will be held in San Diego on Friday, October 31, 2025.
