It is with much sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother, Vivian Margaret Borland, on April 25th, 2022.
Born Madeline Murphy on June 2nd, 1930 her name was changed to Vivian Margaret Schmitz upon adoption by Robert and Clara Schmitz. Vivian was raised on a ranch in Van Nuys, California during the Great Depression, where she had an idyllic childhood.After graduating from Corvallis high school she attended University of California at Santa Barbara, where she was chapter president of Delta Zeta Sorority as well as president of Chimes Junior Women's Society and other prestigious organizations.Her most notable achievement however, was meeting her future spouse, our father Harry Borland, who also attended UCSB.
She received her Bachelors of Education Degree and teaching credentials from UCSB.She also attended University of California Irvine, where she earned a Gesell Institute certification.Vivian went on to have a distinguished career of twenty-four years teaching first grade at St. Cecilia School in Tustin, California.At the latter stage of her teaching career she was nominated and chosen for the Miriam Joseph Farrell Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1990 by the National Catholic Education Association.
Vivian's other career was raising a family of five children, which she did with a firm and loving hand. Vivian guided all of us through the years with her tireless energy and work ethic.Always active and with a busy social life centered around devotion to family, church and career she lived a full and generous life until the very end, always there to help and be a caring presence to others.
Vivian is predeceased by Harry Borland her husband of 58 years and is survived by her children; Kathy Mitchell (Vincent), James (Kate), Michael (Caryn), David and Julia Smith, as well as grandchildren Darcy, Emily, Alison and Justin.We will miss you greatly but are consoled that you are with the Lord and our dear dad in heaven.
A service will be held at St. Nicholas church and her ashes placed at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest.
