Obituary

Robert William Mulcahy, 79, of San Juan Capistrano, CA, passed away from a brief illness on November 1, 2020. The son of the late Robert and Dorothy Mulcahy, Bob was raised in the Boston neighborhood of West Roxbury. His upbringing was full of music, family gatherings, and the joys of an extended Irish family.

Bob's career in music audio sales began in the late 1950's working for McIntosh Audio, out of Binghamton NY. It was an exciting time for the industry, and he took his installation and sales talent to other companies including Lang and Taylor, Advent Corp, KLH, and Audio Lab. He loved design and creating spaces and after moving to California, in 1979, he took what was a natural talent and started his own finish carpentry business, Lastco Fine Woodworking. In his later years he worked in sales for Honda. He remained active in retirement working part time at Michaels in the frame department, volunteering as part of the Orange County Fire Watch network and at the San Clemente State Beach Historic Cottage and Visitors Center.

He loved the library, music, cooking for others, browsing stores for a deal that he couldn't resist or simply visiting with family (and never without a gift of some sort). He always had his nose in a book, digital or paper, often reading several at any given time. The pleasure found through music stemmed from his father and his own career as a musician and music teacher. The digital age brought great joy due to the ability to find videos of so many artists and the songs they played. This love of music's richness was shared with his brother Tom and many other family members. Of food, he was in a constant quest for the perfect bagel or pastrami sandwich (none ever found that would rival the deli's of Blue Hill Avenue). His attraction to sweets was epic and he found peace with black coffee and a glazed scone. With family, simply being in their presence was enough but dinners and conversations of times past provided the lasting bond.

His longing for Boston never faded. He would travel east whenever possible to enjoy the company of his brother, cousins and children. He is survived by his brother, Thomas Mulcahy; his nephew Christopher Mulcahy; his ex-wife and best friend, Suzanne Mulcahy; his stepchildren, Richard Goldstein, Wendi K. G. Hurley; his children, Lianne M. Hunt, Tracy M. Olson, Michelle M. Filippone, and Robert W. Mulcahy III; and his 12 grandchildren, Henry, Elizabeth, Patrick, Maggie, Skyler, Levi, Jake, Trevor, Gabe, Spencer, Maxwell, and Lila.
